Entrepreneurship Training in Rural Parts of Bihar, India - Opportunities of Empowering Disadvantaged Youth
Dissertation - Fak. 3 - Geographie
Status:abgeschlossen
Kurzinhalt:This dissertation deals with the socially disadvantaged youth sector from rural parts of the Indian state of Bihar, one of the structurally weakest and poorest states of India. A major issue in this state, which is dominated by agriculture, is the absence of industry, coupled with a lack of job opportunities in the non-agricultural sector. Hence, Bihar is the Indian state with the highest rate of people who migrate to other parts of the country. This concerns especially young people from rural parts of Bihar, who find no future prospects for themselves in the agricultural sector.
Economists often refer to the great significance of entrepreneurship development in connection with poverty alleviation. This brings the focus to the core research question of this dissertation: how did the entrepreneurship training help disadvantaged youth in rural parts of Bihar, India, to become empowered and thereby to improve their productive livelihoods through engagement in a self-employed activity, and how do these youth cope with structural conditions that enable or constrain them?
During an extensive field survey between November 2015 and April 2016, various training centres were visited in three different districts of Bihar, in order to make contact with self-employed youth who have undergone an entrepreneurship training. In this regard, the Drishtee Foundation, an Indian non-governmental organization with multifaceted services and projects targeted at the sustainable development of rural communities, was the main cooperation partner.
The qualitative research design is built up in two parts, namely the evaluative qualitative text analysis and the type-building analysis. The findings of the analysis reveal stark differences between the entrepreneurs. Some of them developed personal initiative and thus coped with limiting structural conditions very proactively, while others solely behaved in a reactive way. Furthermore, for many of the young entrepreneurs the self-employed activity was only a Plan B, as in the reality they thrived for high-prestige career jobs. Based on these findings, four types of entrepreneurs are created, who represent different livelihood strategies, which the entrepreneurs use to gain access to sustainable livelihoods.
These types lay the basis for drawing conclusions with respect to the opportunities of empowering disadvantaged youth through entrepreneurship training. As a result of this analysis, recommendations are formulated for the training providers and the societal and political stakeholders involved as to how to improve structural conditions in favour of young entrepreneurs from deprived sections of the society in rural parts of Bihar.
