Abstract
Special Olympics (SO) offers a variety of sporting opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities worldwide. Numerous positive achievements in the context of sports participation through SO have been documented and acknowledged by studies. At the same time, there is still a lack of critical analyses that question the contribution of SO or its claim to be contributing to the development of an inclusive society. This article aims to address this research desideratum against the background of a critical examination of ableism. With the help of a document analysis, the article examines official documents of Special Olympics Germany (SOD) and analyzes ability constructions within the SOD guidelines. The formation of categories is performed via a qualitative content analysis method with a deductive-inductive approach including the four main categories eligibility, classification system, principle of advancement, and Unified Sports®. The results show that key features of ableist orders can be found above all in the core element of Special Olympics – the sports concept. Through the SO concept, performance is unquestioningly defined as a key characteristic of successful inclusion, in that the SO participants present themselves to society as capable subjects through their (sporting) performance. Further research, especially from the perspective of people with disabilities, is needed to expand and optimize the existing inclusive approaches.
