Abstract
The present study addresses the question of which nominal species knowledge visitors to the German federal horticultural show (BUGA) in 2023
in the city of Mannheim were able to access. 389 visitors were asked about their species knowledge on selected wild, crop and ornamental
plant species as well as selected animal species which are common in the Rhine-Neckar region where the show was held. 18 plants of different
species (herbaceous and woody flowering plants) were presented as living originals in pots. 18 animals of different species (vertebrates and
invertebrates) were provided as taxidermy mounts, near-natural replicas on a scale of 1 : 1 (amphibians, molluscs) or as pinned dead insects in
dioramas. A questionnaire was used to document which animal and plant species were correctly named with their German names and which
species were frequently confused. In addition, the extent to which there are correlations between nominal species knowledge, age, gender,
educational qualification or place of residence was examined. As a supplement, a questionnaire was used to find out where the respondents
had acquired their knowledge. In general, the data reveal major shortcomings in knowledge of names of invertebrates, songbirds and some
plants. For example, many participants were unable to distinguish between newts and reptiles, bugs and beetles or rabbits and hares. Species
knowledge correlated positively with the age of the respondents.
